Dedicated to the nation- ‘Statue of Unity

There are many things that make India an incredible country but one of the most impressive is the Statue of Unity. The Statue of Unity is a monument dedicated to India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and first Home Minister Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. It is located in the Indian state of Gujarat. The then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone for the construction of this giant statue on October 31, 2013, on the occasion of Sardar Patel’s birthday.

The Statue of Unity has been built in honor of SardarVallabhbhai Patel. The credit for uniting 560 princely states in independent India is given to Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel, hence the name of this statue is ‘Statue of Unity.

The total height of this statue is 240 meters, in which there is a base of 58 meters and a statue of 182 meters. This statue is made of steel cast reinforced concrete and bronze coating.

Two lifts are also installed in this statue, this statue can stand stable even in the wind blowing at a speed of 180 km per hour. It can also withstand an earthquake of 6.5 magnitudes. Along with Indian laborers, 200 Chinese workers have also contributed in the construction of this statue. These people worked in different batches for two to three months from September 2017. From here one can have a bird’s eye view of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, its reservoir, and the Satpura and Vindhya mountain ranges.

In January 2020, it was recognized as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. It was included in the eight wonders of the world.

The Statue of Unity was designed by Padma Bhushan awardee sculptor Ram V Sutar and the intricate bronze cladding work of the statue was done by the Chinese foundry Jiangxi Tokine Company.

The total weight of the Statue of Unity is 1700 tons. It is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty (93 m) in America. While it is four times higher than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer tower. A total of Rs 2,989 crore was spent to make it.

The construction work of the statue started in April 2015. It has 70 thousand tonnes of cement and about 24000 tonnes of steel, 1700 tonnes of copper, and the same amount of bronze. The idol is unique in itself. Its leg height is 80 feet, hand height is 70 feet, shoulder height is 140 feet and face height is 70 feet.
